Smart stb problem with Samsung TV

I have SMART STB and it is on an old Smart Samsung TV. It works okay however once I choose a program, I can't get out of it to go back to the program list.
I try the Back button etc but the remote goes dead. It only does this with Smart STB so I doubt it us the remote.
Any ideas please?
Is it my TV, The connect to the Web, or the SmartStb program.
